BRAND IDENTITY & DESIGN

Local author, Paul Cross, came to us looking to refresh the cover for his first published novel; The Girl from the Folies Bergère. Paul wanted to update the existing design to increase the impact of the book within Amazon's online bookstore.

Book cover art inspired by Édouard Manet

The storyline of the book focuses heavily on the painting ‘A Bar at the Folies Bergère’ by impressionist painter Édouard Manet. The main character is drawn into the painting and time travels back to Paris in the late 1800’s, into a world created by Édouard Manet.

With this in mind, Paul was keen to ensure a strong reference to the painting was made on the cover but also wanted to create a more contemporary look and feel, with an eye-catching design to entice the reader to learn more about the book - and buy it!

Striking design and bold colour

We designed a number of cover options, some using the painting itself, as well as the chosen cover which features a stylised vintage twist, this stood out from the rest of the pack thanks to its striking design and bold use of colour.

The strong font, Afterclap, was chosen which is reminiscent of the lettering used on the Art Nouveau style posters, which advertised the cabaret entertainment at the Folies Bergère in Paris during the late 1800s. Paul loved the simplicity of the design and the nod to the original painting.

We provided the full artwork for the front cover, back and spine ready for printing, as well as all the necessary files for the online bookstores.

We wish Paul all the best with his new book and definitely recommend you check out the Amazon store and take a look
