Designing a new book cover

We may try really hard not too, but most of us probably are a little ‘guilty’ of judging a book by its cover! We were intrigued and excited to work with local author Paul Cross to refresh the cover for his first published novel; The Girl from the Folies Bergère.

Paul was keen to retain a strong reference to the painting that inspires the storyline ‘A Bar at the Folies Bergère’, by Édouard Manet. However, wanted to create a more contemporary, eye-catching look and feel to entice readers in.

The chosen cover features a striking stylised interpretation of the original painting, with a vintage twist. Reminiscent of the Art Nouveau posters widely used in the last 1800s, Afterclap font was chosen to add a bold and simple elegance to the overall design.
