A Day in the Life of a Marketing Account Manager

A varied role…

The life of a Marketing Account Manager at Mzuri is always varied and exciting. No two days are ever the same – whether we’re writing proposals, scheduling new projects or attending new business meetings, brainstorming creative ideas or copywriting for a new website, you can guarantee each day is a fresh challenge!

Starting the day…

Generally, we start the day with a cuppa, team catch up and a long to-do list! If not heading directly into a meeting, the first task will be to read through new emails, noting any changes to current projects or assessing new briefs that may have arrived. Then we need to prioritise our work load and discuss the projects with our studio manager to make sure our goals for the day are aligned.

Balancing a range of skill sets…

Due to the number of different projects we can be handling at any time, all at different stages of progression, multi-tasking is a key skill for a successful Account Manager. We need the ability to tap into a multitude of different skill sets, switching between different trains of thought, with seamless clarity. One minute we can be engaging the intuitive and creative right side of the brain, coming up with new campaign ideas and feeding back on design work – the next, we need to use the left side of the brain with a more logical, analytical approach, planning out a new strategy or project or looking at campaign analytics.

Along with strategic thinking, attention to detail and a creative eye, being highly organised is a must for exceptional project management – an integral part of an Account Manager’s responsibility. It is also crucial to have extensive knowledge of the range of disciplines with work within and coordinate in order to seamlessly deliver projects and expertise for our clients, including marketing, websites, social media, design, artwork, digital, print etc.

Achieving success is always a balance between keeping a good strategic overview of the bigger picture whilst maintaining a keen eye for the detail. As Account Managers, we need to be talented masters of many skills as well as expert jugglers – not allowing any ball to drop!

Variety is the spice of life…

Like most Account Managers, at Mzuri we have a very diverse range of clients that we work with. These include (but are certainly not limited to) high end interior designers, business coaches, lawyers, financial advisors, dental and doctors’ surgeries, ship builders, signage companies, recruitment specialists, coaches and consultants, charities, schools, event technology all stars and space and satellite consultants! As you can imagine, we need to spend a good deal of time researching our clients and the industries they operate in so that we can fully understand the challenges they face, and be best placed to give them expert strategic and marketing advice.

Keeping track…

At the end of a busy day, it is important for us to keep a close eye on what we have been up to, which accounts we have been working on and what the next steps will be. We are meticulous time keepers so that we are always able to be accountable when we bill our lovely clients.

And home… 

After a busy and rewarding day, we all head home for a busy and rewarding evening with our families (we have lots of children between us!).
