Work Experience at Mzuri

We were delighted to welcome Charlotte and Ottilie to the Mzuri team for a week of work experience. There’s nothing like real-life work experience to help refine your career aspirations – and we love the new ideas they created for the project! Find out about their time at Mzuti below.

Charlotte

To begin with, I would like to thank everyone at Mzuri design who made me feel welcome and for giving me the opportunity to get a feel for the industry. It has been incredible to be exposed to many phases of graphic design.

I’m currently taking my A levels at Godalming College studying graphic design, business studies and photography.

At the beginning of this experience, I was given a creative brief by Phil which entailed several different aspects from logo design, packaging and leaflet design. Through working on a live brief, it allowed me to see what the day to day life of design is like. I was very pleased to find this out as this was a key element that I wanted to get from the work experience. On day one I came up with different sketches of logo designs, then I digitised them and developed my favourite to create a final design for the end presentation.

By using the skills I have learnt in college and the help of the lovely team at Mzuri I have gained a lot of real-life experience of the industry and it has helped me to decide on my career in the future.

I had the chance to develop my own programme skills with the help of Tatum and I know what it takes to present to clients in a professional way.

Also, by discussing with Tatum, I have a better understanding of the wide range of possibilities in design as there is such a broad spectrum of job opportunities.

Ottilie

Hi, I’m Ottilie and I have just finished my first year at Alton College studying Graphic Design (English and Sociology!) and I am working towards finding a career in the creative industry.

Last week, I joined Mzuri to work on a creative brief with Charlotte, which has given me valuable experience in working on a brief from start to finish. It has been really interesting learning the process of design and exploring software I had not used before, the guidance from Phil and Tatum was really useful! I have learnt about the different aspects of working in a design studio, including logo design, research, copywriting and package design. It was also valuable to find out that not all focus is placed on ‘art working’ in the industry; there is a lot more to a company than just the designers.

We started the week by sketching lots and lots of potential logos for the project. This was useful in developing a strong brand image. Charlotte and I worked together to develop two logos, which we would later pitch through concept boards to the client. We then used these two designs for a leaflet to accompany the product and a sticker for the packaging. I really enjoyed developing the original concepts and seeing them come to life on mock-up images.

I have really liked working with Mzuri as it such a lovely company and the team is amazing. I have learnt lots about the industry and experienced working on a real-life brief which has given me skills that will be useful for future design projects at college and further ahead.
